Can You Work Remotely from Japan?
Yes. Japan has a special status of residence for certain international remote workers, commonly known as the Japan Digital Nomad Visa.
The official status of residence is "Designated Activities – Digital Nomad."
It allows eligible foreign nationals to stay in Japan for up to six months while continuing to work remotely for an overseas employer or providing services to clients located outside Japan.
This visa can be particularly useful for IT professionals, engineers, designers, consultants, entrepreneurs, freelancers and other location-independent professionals who want to experience living in Japan without leaving their overseas work.
Who Is Eligible for Japan's Digital Nomad Visa?
The main requirements include the following.
✓ You are a national or citizen of an eligible country or region
✓ You intend to stay in Japan for no more than six months
✓ You will perform international remote work using information and communication technology
✓ Your annual income is at least JPY 10 million
✓ You have qualifying private medical insurance covering your stay in Japan
✓ Your work is for an overseas employer or clients located outside Japan
What Kind of Remote Work Is Allowed?
Employees of Overseas Companies
You may work remotely from Japan for an overseas corporation or organization under an employment agreement with that foreign entity.
The work must relate to the overseas office or business of the foreign organization.
Freelancers and Independent Professionals
Freelancers may also qualify when they use information and communication technology to provide paid services or sell goods to customers located outside Japan.
Examples may include:
Important: This Is Not a Visa for Working for a Japanese Company
The Digital Nomad status is intended for international remote work. It does not allow you to take ordinary employment in Japan under an employment agreement with a Japanese company or organization.
If you want to work for a Japanese company, another work-related status of residence, such as Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services, may need to be considered.
JPY 10 Million Annual Income Requirement
One of the most important requirements is annual income.
The applicant must have an annual income of at least JPY 10 million.
Depending on the applicant's situation, evidence may include documents such as:
✓ Tax certificates
✓ Income certificates
✓ Employment agreements
✓ Certificates of employment
✓ Business or service agreements
✓ Other documents showing stable annual income
For self-employed applicants, simply showing the total value of contracts may not be sufficient. The actual income after necessary business expenses may be relevant when the income requirement is examined.
If you receive stable income from multiple sources, the income may be considered together when determining whether you meet the JPY 10 million annual income requirement.
Is Your Country Eligible?
The Digital Nomad Visa is not available to nationals of every country.
The applicant must generally be a national or citizen of a country or region designated under Japan's Digital Nomad program, which is based on factors including Japan's visa exemption arrangements and tax treaty framework.
Because the eligible-country list may change, we recommend checking the latest official list before preparing your application.

Private Medical Insurance Is Required
Digital Nomads are not treated as mid- to long-term residents under Japan's immigration system. Therefore, qualifying private medical insurance is an important part of the application.
The insurance must cover the applicant during the planned stay in Japan, including risks such as:
✓ Illness
✓ Injury
✓ Death
Medical treatment coverage for illness and injury must be at least JPY 10 million.
Credit-card travel insurance may be accepted if the required coverage can be clearly demonstrated, but documents showing the actual coverage will be necessary.
How Long Can You Stay in Japan?
The permitted period of stay is six months.
The Digital Nomad status cannot be extended.
This is therefore different from ordinary long-term work visas and is not designed as a direct route to permanent residence in Japan.
If you stay for the full six-month period and later wish to use the Digital Nomad status again, you generally need to spend at least six months outside Japan before applying again.
Will You Receive a Japanese Residence Card?
No.
Digital Nomads staying under this Designated Activities status are not treated as mid- to long-term residents and do not receive a Japanese residence card.
This may affect practical matters such as opening certain bank accounts, mobile-phone contracts, rental agreements and other services that normally require a residence card.
It is therefore important to plan not only the immigration procedure, but also your practical living arrangements in Japan.
Can Your Spouse and Children Come to Japan?
Yes, an eligible spouse or child who is supported by the Digital Nomad applicant may accompany the applicant under a separate Designated Activities status for the spouse or child of a Digital Nomad.
Family members must also satisfy applicable requirements, including private medical insurance.
Documents may include:
✓ Marriage certificate
✓ Birth certificate
✓ Passport copies
✓ Private medical insurance documents
The eligible countries and regions for accompanying family members are not necessarily identical to the list for the principal Digital Nomad applicant, so eligibility should be checked individually.
How Do You Apply from Outside Japan?
For a typical applicant who is currently living outside Japan, the visa application is submitted to the Japanese Embassy, Consulate-General or other competent Japanese diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence.
Important information about the Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Although immigration information includes a Certificate of Eligibility procedure for this status, the Immigration Services Agency's official Q&A explains that an applicant who is outside Japan normally has no eligible proxy in Japan for the Digital Nomad COE application. Such applicants are therefore instructed to apply directly for a visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate where they reside.
Our office can assist you with checking your eligibility and organizing the documents required for your Digital Nomad application.
The final visa application is submitted by the applicant to the competent Japanese diplomatic mission overseas.
