Japan does not have a general residence visa for wealthy families
Financial independence can make international relocation easier to plan, but wealth alone does not provide Japanese residence rights. Every family member must qualify for a specific status based on activities, family relationship or other legal circumstances.
Operate a business in Japan
A founder or executive may consider Business Manager or another applicable status if the actual Japanese business and individual eligibility meet the rules. A qualifying spouse or child may be eligible for Dependent status.
Relocate as a senior professional
A qualifying executive, specialist or researcher may be eligible for Highly Skilled Professional or J-Skip. Special provisions for certain spouses, parents and household staff may apply under strict conditions.
Transfer to Japan through employment
An eligible international assignment or Japanese employment arrangement may support Intra-company Transferee or another work-related status, with dependent-family applications where permitted.
Review each family member separately
Different passports, adult children, a working spouse, prior marriages, parents or long-term school plans may require different routes instead of one application category for everyone.
Japan's special long-stay route for sightseeing and recreation generally allows an eligible adult to stay for six months, potentially up to one year with an extension. An accompanying spouse can qualify under specific rules, but dependent children cannot accompany under that particular program. It is not a general family relocation route.
Which status of residence may fit your family?
| Main situation | Potential immigration route | Family considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Founder operating a Japanese business | Business Manager, if requirements are met | Eligible spouse and dependent children may qualify for Dependent status. |
| Qualifying senior executive or specialist | Highly Skilled Professional / J-Skip | Dependent family may qualify; additional family and domestic-worker provisions have separate conditions. |
| Employee transferred from a UAE company | Intra-company Transferee, where eligible | Spouse and dependent children may qualify under Dependent rules. |
| Professional employed by a Japanese organization | Appropriate employment status | Family eligibility depends on the principal status and evidence of support. |
| Spouse of a Japanese national or qualifying permanent resident | Relevant status-based spouse category | Different legal rules apply; this is not the standard Dependent category. |
| Independent wealthy tourist | Designated Activities for long sightseeing/recreation, if eligible | Spouse-specific rules; no dependent children under this particular program. |
The table illustrates possibilities, not automatic eligibility. The principal applicant's activities and each family member's circumstances are examined individually.
Japan Dependent Visa: spouses and children of eligible residents
The Japanese status of residence Dependent (家族滞在) covers the daily activities of a spouse or child receiving support from someone residing in Japan under certain designated statuses. These include Business Manager, Highly Skilled Professional, Intra-company Transferee and various qualifying work or study categories.
Documented family ties
Marriage or birth evidence, and any further records needed to establish the family relationship.
Ability to support dependants
Evidence of the principal resident's income, employment or business activity, and other relevant financial circumstances.
Qualifying principal status
The sponsor's Japanese status or pending qualifying entry must support the intended family application.
A parent, sibling, domestic worker or unmarried partner is not automatically eligible for ordinary Dependent status. Adult children may also face closer scrutiny regarding genuine dependency and intended activities; age alone is not a universal automatic approval or refusal rule.
Can a spouse work after arrival?
Ordinary Dependent status does not itself authorize employment. If the appropriate permission to engage in an activity outside the status is granted, certain paid activities may be permitted, generally up to 28 hours per week under comprehensive permission. Different rules can apply to specific work and highly skilled spouses; a spouse intending substantial employment should be assessed for a suitable status.
Planning your children's move to Japan
For families considering Japanese schools or international schools, the child's lawful residence arrangement should be reviewed before enrollment commitments. School admission and permission to reside in Japan are distinct matters.
Young children and school-age dependants
We review parent-child evidence, the sponsor's status, financial support and the child's intended residence. A child's residence card, local address and school enrollment are different administrative matters.
University-age or adult children
Older dependent children are not necessarily excluded solely by age, but genuine support, education and actual circumstances can be important. Student status or another independent category may be more appropriate.
Children from earlier relationships
Where relevant, custody, guardianship, parental consent and relationship evidence may require detailed review. We do not assume that a family relationship document alone answers every issue.
Different passports within one family
We examine each applicant's nationality and immigration situation individually. UAE residency does not make family members with different nationalities subject to identical visa procedures.
Our office can support Japanese immigration documentation. School admissions, guardianship disputes, educational placement and related specialist services must be handled separately by the appropriate schools or professionals.
Parents, working spouses and household staff: special rules
For international high-net-worth families, relocation plans sometimes include elderly parents, a nanny or a long-employed household worker. Japan does not generally treat them as ordinary dependants simply because the family can afford their living expenses.
Parents of a highly skilled professional
In certain cases, parents of the principal or spouse may qualify under designated provisions, such as childcare for a child under seven or support during pregnancy, subject to household income, co-residence and other conditions.
A spouse who wishes to work
Some spouses of Highly Skilled Professionals may qualify for special work arrangements under prescribed activities and conditions. Alternatively, their own employment status may be considered.
Domestic workers and nannies
Specific Designated Activities provisions can apply to qualifying highly skilled households, including J-Skip cases. Employment conditions, household income and other requirements are strict; permission is never automatic.
Multiple-generation family relocation
We review the principal applicant, spouse, children and any additional relative separately. If no suitable route exists for a person, we explain that limitation rather than promising a family-wide visa.

Special considerations for Dubai and Abu Dhabi families
Do not assume that entry as a temporary visitor can routinely be converted into long-term family residence. A change from Temporary Visitor status is restricted; the correct overseas application route should usually be examined before departure.
Documents commonly reviewed for family applications
| Applicant / issue | Typical evidence to consider |
|---|---|
| Principal applicant | Passport, planned Japanese activity, relevant employer or business documents, eligibility for the proposed status and Japan-side application arrangements. |
| Spouse | Marriage certificate or equivalent, passport details, supporting sponsor records and Japanese translation of foreign-language documents. |
| Children | Birth certificates, passports, dependency evidence and, where applicable, guardianship or custody documentation. |
| Financial support | Evidence of employment, business income, tax status or other accepted proof that the sponsor can maintain the family. |
| Japan-side procedure | COE application or another appropriate application form, documents proving the eligible person filing in Japan and any category-specific records. |
There is no universal checklist for every family. The official document set varies by residence category, application type and personal circumstances. Additional evidence may be requested.
Do not send passport scans, children's personal records or financial statements with your first website inquiry. We will explain what information is needed and how supporting materials should be provided after a suitable engagement arrangement.
How our family immigration support works
Tell us each person's nationality, age, relationship and proposed activity in Japan.
We consider the principal status and the eligibility of every accompanying family member.
We define the application scope, fees and external expenses before engagement.
We assist with authorized documentation and filing procedures, subject to the required application arrangement.
Principal and family applications may be coordinated, but the correct order, Japan-side applicant or agent, and any consular steps depend on the chosen residence categories. We do not promise simultaneous approval or a particular entry date.
We can help identify which applications belong together, which require a separate status and what should be decided before you arrange your move.
Family immigration fees: tailored to each case
Our quotation reflects the principal applicant's route, the number of family members, document complexity, any special family circumstances and the work we are permitted to undertake. We confirm the professional service scope and applicable tax treatment before engagement.
Government charges, translations, certification, document procurement, shipping, travel and services provided by other licensed professionals may be charged separately. Fees do not purchase residence or guarantee approval.

Moving to Japan with family: questions from UAE residents
Can a wealthy family move to Japan without working or starting a business?
There is no general family residence status based solely on wealth. Each person needs an eligible residence route. Japan's special sightseeing/recreation long-stay scheme does not allow dependent children under that program.
Can my spouse and children apply if I receive Business Manager status?
Eligible spouses and dependent children may qualify for Dependent status if the principal applicant has a qualifying status, the family relationship is established and appropriate financial support is shown. Approval is individual.
Does buying a luxury home give our family the right to live in Japan?
No. Property ownership does not itself grant a Japanese residence status. Any planned residence or work activity must have an independent immigration basis.
I live in Dubai but hold another country's passport. Can I apply?
Yes, you may inquire. Immigration eligibility is assessed using each person's passport nationality, proposed activity and personal circumstances. Holding UAE residency is not equivalent to holding UAE citizenship.
Can an adult child accompany us as a dependant?
There is no simple universal age cut-off that answers every case. Genuine dependency, the child's activities and the family's facts matter. An independent Student or other status may be more appropriate.
Can my spouse work full-time with Dependent status?
Not automatically. Ordinary Dependent status does not itself allow employment. Comprehensive permission for activities outside the status generally allows certain work up to 28 hours weekly. Full-time or other specialized work may require an appropriate independent status or a specific highly skilled spouse provision.
Can we bring our parents to live with us?
Parents are not covered by ordinary Dependent status. Limited special routes exist for certain highly skilled households, for example in specified childcare or pregnancy-related situations, subject to income, co-residence and other requirements.
Can we bring our nanny or household staff from the UAE?
Not automatically. Specific Designated Activities routes may be available to qualifying highly skilled or other specially eligible employers, with strict employment, remuneration and household conditions. We review eligibility separately before discussing documents.
Does Japan's long-stay sightseeing program permit children?
No. That particular program can permit eligible adults and, subject to special conditions, a spouse, but dependent children cannot accompany under the scheme. A different residence strategy is needed for a family with children.
Does enrollment in an international school guarantee a child's visa?
No. Enrollment and immigration eligibility are separate. A child must meet the rules for the intended residence status. Schools decide admission under their own policies.
Can we enter Japan as tourists and change to family residence later?
Changes from Temporary Visitor status are restricted. The correct COE and visa pathway should normally be considered before travel instead of assuming a change is available after entry.
What if our marriage or birth documents were issued in the UAE?
Relevant overseas documents can be considered, but the Japanese immigration procedure generally requires Japanese translations of foreign-language submissions. Additional certification or relationship evidence depends on the facts and procedure.
Can all family applications be filed together?
Coordination may be possible, but the applicant or authorized Japan-side agent, timing and documents depend on each status. Family members do not receive automatic permission simply because the principal applicant qualifies.
Will permanent residence follow after a few years?
Not automatically. Permanent residence has its own substantive and residence-history criteria. Some qualifying highly skilled professionals benefit from special rules, but every application is examined individually.
Can your office help with school admissions, tax planning and buying property?
We focus on immigration and administrative documentation within our professional scope. School admissions, taxation, property brokerage, real-estate registration and any regulated investment or legal representation require the appropriate institutions or licensed specialists.
Is the initial consultation free, and what are your professional fees?
Yes, the initial consultation is free. All UAE-focused family immigration matters receive an individual quotation showing the agreed work and any separate expected expenses. We cannot guarantee a visa or immigration decision.
