Corporate accounting
Assess professional reporting, closing, management accounting and finance responsibilities.
Planning to join a Japanese company as an accountant, financial analyst, corporate finance specialist, controller or finance planning professional? In-house accounting and finance work can be considered under Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services when the responsibilities demand specialist humanities knowledge. We explain degree-to-work relevance, the difference from Japan’s separate licensed Legal/Accounting Services status, employer documentation and immigration application routes.

Assess professional reporting, closing, management accounting and finance responsibilities.
Explain budgeting, modeling, risk, treasury and investment analysis.
Prepare credible finance job descriptions and organization-category documents.
The legal status is Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services (技術・人文知識・国際業務). Under the humanities route, business, economics, commerce and related knowledge may support substantive corporate accounting or finance roles. This is different from the legal immigration status for professional services reserved by law for qualified attorneys, certified public accountants and similar persons.
Internal monthly and annual accounts, financial analysis, consolidation, planning or treasury at an employer.
Group reporting, accounting-policy analysis, transfer-pricing coordination and cross-border treasury.
Activities legally reserved to qualified accountants or tax professionals may require a different occupational and immigration analysis.
| Role / duty | Professional substance to document | Possible concern |
|---|---|---|
| Financial accountant | Month-end/year-end closing, standards-based reporting, consolidation, accounting controls. | Routine document filing or repetitive entry as the primary task. |
| FP&A / finance analyst | Forecasts, financial modeling, profitability and variance analysis, management reporting. | Merely copying figures into spreadsheets without analysis. |
| Treasury / corporate finance | Liquidity forecasting, capital policy support, banking relationships and financing analysis. | Cashier duties or ordinary payment processing only. |
| Tax or compliance support | Internal tax-accounting coordination, research and controls within lawful employment scope. | Performing regulated tax representation or filings reserved to qualified professionals. |
| Audit / controls analyst | Internal audit planning, risk analysis and internal control testing. | Assuming foreign certification automatically licenses a regulated Japanese audit service. |
| Accounts payable / receivable | May qualify if genuine specialist accounting judgment is central. | Pure voucher scanning, data entry and clerical filing without specialist duties. |
For specialist humanities work, a qualifying university background must have a reasonable relation to the professional duties. Alternatively, the career route generally requires at least 10 years of relevant experience, subject to prescribed rules on countable periods. The separate “international services” three-year route should not be assumed for ordinary corporate bookkeeping.
| Candidate background | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|
| Bachelor of accounting / finance | Usually a relevant field for specialist accounting and finance work; verify actual qualification and duties. |
| Economics, business, management or commerce | Potentially relevant; match finance and accounting courses with proposed responsibilities. |
| Mathematics, statistics or data analytics | May support quantitative finance, risk or modeling tasks depending on syllabus and work. |
| Unrelated bachelor's degree | Review actual coursework, professional career and the available legal route; degree alone is not an automatic approval. |
| No qualifying degree | Examine verifiable relevant professional experience and actual job specialization. |
| ACCA, CPA or bookkeeping certificates | May support professional knowledge but do not automatically replace the immigration education/experience rules or grant a Japanese professional license. |
Japan has a separate residence status named Legal/Accounting Services (法律・会計業務) for specified professional activities performed by persons holding legally required qualifications. Its scope differs from an employed finance manager or staff accountant using economics or business knowledge within a company.
| Work setting | Possible immigration approach |
|---|---|
| Employee handling internal management accounts and forecasts | Engineer/Specialist may apply if the work is genuinely specialized and the applicant qualifies. |
| Foreign-qualified accountant hired as corporate analyst | Consider actual employment work under Engineer/Specialist; overseas CPA status is not a substitute for Japanese licensing. |
| Practice statutory Japanese CPA work or reserved tax-representation services | Professional licensing laws and potentially Legal/Accounting Services or another correct residence basis must be checked. |
| Chief financial officer / executive with business-management authority | Depending on actual duties, consider whether Business Manager or another status is appropriate instead. |
Pay must generally be at least equivalent to the remuneration a Japanese national would receive for comparable work. There is no universal fixed “accountant visa minimum salary.” JLPT N2 is also not a blanket requirement for analytical finance work; genuine employer language expectations can still apply.
| Applicant | Japanese receiving organization |
|---|---|
| Passport / present residence card where applicable | Official category-appropriate application and supporting organizational documents. |
| Degree / transcript, course descriptions if needed | Employment offer or labor conditions notice and a detailed financial job description. |
| Past employers’ evidence for the relevant-experience route | Corporate business profile, registration and accounts where required by category. |
| Professional certifications if relevant | Organization representative declaration for applicable category 3/4 cases. |
| Japanese translations for foreign-language records | Team reporting structure and sample responsibilities if immigration requests detail. |
Some employers have confidentiality concerns about internal finances. Any supplementary information should be provided lawfully, only to the extent needed for immigration review.
Distinguish specialist accounting/finance work from routine office support or reserved professional services.
Match the applicant’s course of study or years of relevant work to the finance role.
Determine which Japanese company supporting documents are needed.
An overseas candidate normally pursues a COE route; a qualifying resident in Japan may use change-of-status procedures.
A COE is not itself a consular visa; do not start unauthorized full-time work under an unrelated current status.
Retain the employment and remuneration evidence; update the application if employment or duties changed.
Send the actual accounting or finance duties, the degree or career background and the Japanese company category if known. We can outline the immigration evidence and fees.
Request an English Consultation“Office clerk” or “accountant” does not explain specialist responsibilities.
The case may require course evidence or verifiable professional experience.
A company accounting job is different from independent legal accounting or tax representation.
| Service | Professional fee (tax included) | Scope / exclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Engineer / Specialist COE | From ¥110,000 | New overseas employee; eligibility and employer documents. |
| Change to Engineer / Specialist | From ¥110,000 | For a qualifying applicant in Japan. |
| Ordinary extension without job change | From ¥44,000 | Standard Engineer/Specialist renewal. |
| Complex career, company or supporting statements | Individual quotation | Scope reviewed before engagement. |
These are starting professional fees. Government permission charges if applicable, translations, certificate procurement, postage, travel and extra supporting materials are separate. A COE application ordinarily has no immigration filing fee. Where a matter falls outside administrative scrivener scope, a separately qualified professional may be required. We provide a quotation before engagement.
Potentially. Specialist corporate accounting can fall under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities when education or career, duties and Japan-side employment satisfy the rules.
There is no generic immigration status officially named Accountant Visa. Ordinary corporate finance may use Engineer/Specialist; legally reserved professional services are governed separately.
The actual main duties matter. Specialist financial reporting may be eligible; mainly repetitive data entry or routine filing raises difficulty.
Not necessarily that exact title. Relevant business, economics, finance or another qualifying educational background may work, depending on the role.
Professional qualifications are valuable evidence but do not automatically displace the prescribed academic or relevant-experience requirements.
Those services can be legally regulated. Separate Japanese qualification rules and immigration status analysis are needed.
The ordinary humanities professional-experience route generally calls for ten years of relevant experience, with statutory rules for countable study periods.
Potentially, if actual advanced quantitative finance duties are connected to the education and other requirements are met.
It depends on actual executive management authority and activities. A senior title does not alone determine the correct status.
No blanket N2 immigration requirement applies to all specialist finance jobs, although an employer may need Japanese and certain language-centered work requires separate proof.
Potentially, but new companies must establish real operations, compensation capacity and the specialist role with appropriate organizational documents.
Primarily routine clerical entry may fail to show specialized humanities knowledge. The real job description should be reviewed.
No. The actual specialized work, your academic or qualifying career background, the Japanese contracting organization and appropriate remuneration must meet immigration requirements.
Our Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services professional fee starts from ¥110,000, including tax. Government charges where relevant and out-of-pocket expenses are separate.
No universal fixed annual salary applies to every Engineer/Specialist position. In general, remuneration must be at least equivalent to a Japanese national doing comparable work.
A qualifying Japan-side organization can generally prepare a COE application for an overseas candidate. Visa issuance by the relevant consulate, if applicable, is a separate process.
