INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TEACHER VISA
Hiring Foreign Teachers for International Schools in Japan
For international school operators and foreign teaching professionals. We review school classification, teaching duties, contracts and immigration options before a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), change or extension application.
Standard extension: ¥44,000 (tax incl.) and up. Government fees and expenses are additional where applicable.
Phone: 9:00–18:00 Japan time. Online inquiries are accepted nationwide and from abroad.
An “international school” name does not determine visa eligibility
An international school may operate as a school regulated by the School Education Act, a registered miscellaneous school, or another type of educational facility. Its legal classification and actual educational activities matter.
The Instructor status may be relevant for qualifying institutions, but it should never be assumed solely because a school teaches in English or offers an international curriculum.
Information we request before an application
Different institutions, different immigration questions
| Setting | Primary consideration |
|---|---|
| Elementary/secondary school | Instructor eligibility, required teaching credentials and work details |
| Registered miscellaneous school | Applicable immigration criteria and teacher experience |
| Unregistered international school | Whether it meets the statutory educational institution scope |
| University or college of technology | Professor status may be more appropriate |
Important points for employers and teachers
Recruiting from overseas
A school generally considers a Certificate of Eligibility application for an overseas hire. If issued, the teacher normally applies for a visa at a Japanese diplomatic mission before entry. A COE is not a guarantee of a visa or entry.
Teaching license versus residence status
A Japanese teaching license may be independently required for certain positions. Immigration status and authority to serve as a teacher are separate legal questions.
Evidence of teaching qualifications
We consider diplomas, relevant licenses, the language of prior education and teaching experience according to the criteria applicable to the school and duties.
Multiple campuses and group companies
Where one company hires a teacher for several campuses, employment, teaching locations and payment arrangements should be documented accurately.

Frequently asked questions
Does every international school qualify for an Instructor visa?
No. Its legal classification, facilities, organisation and teaching activity must be reviewed.
Is IB accreditation enough?
Not on its own. Accreditation and Japanese immigration classification are separate questions.
Can an unregistered school hire overseas teachers?
Hiring and immigration eligibility must be examined separately; an alternative status may need consideration.
Does the COE allow immediate work?
Not by itself. The immigration and entry steps must be completed as applicable.
