Earnings evidence
Reconcile membership receipts, platform fees, refunds and cash payouts without inflating income.
Are you a Patreon-supported illustrator, writer, visual artist or independent creative professional planning to produce paid art in Japan? Patreon membership receipts may be relevant to an Artist residence application, but having subscribers does not automatically establish Artist visa eligibility. The key is to connect support payments to genuine remunerated artistic activity and demonstrate how you will continue that activity while living in Japan.

Reconcile membership receipts, platform fees, refunds and cash payouts without inflating income.
Present published series, creative deliverables, work history and continued production.
Explain future art projects, expected income and whether another activity is dominant.
Japan has no immigration status specifically for Patreon users. The Artist status covers income-generating artistic activities other than qualifying entertainment performances. Income from recurring supporters may be relevant if it arises from qualifying artistic work and can be supported by reliable documents.
| Creator reward or activity | How it could be described | Point to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Original illustration series | Paid access to ongoing creative visual works | Show actual publication dates and author-led creation. |
| Serialized fiction / literary writing | Regular narrative or literary material funded by members | Provide publication archive and artistic writing activities. |
| Making-of / sketches / development diary | Supplement to original artistic production | Explain link to the works rather than treating every post as paid art. |
| Exclusive commissions for supporters | Custom creative works delivered to paying clients | Retain client instructions, finished product and receipts. |
| Generic lifestyle updates or commentary | May be other services rather than an artistic activity | Separate income and time from artistic practice. |
| Selling digital templates or third-party goods | May be commercial or other activity | Check status classification and licensing rights. |
| Revenue record | What it means | Supporting evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Membership billing / gross sales | Amount charged to supporters in a period before relevant deductions | Platform period statements and subscription overview. |
| Membership refunds and reversals | Amounts reversed or not actually retained | Refund and adjustment records. |
| Platform processing or service fees | Amount retained by payment intermediaries or platform | Fee breakdown where accessible. |
| Creator balance / payout | Amount scheduled or transferred to the creator | Payout receipt and bank deposit. |
| Withholding / taxable figures | May differ from both sales and net transfers | Tax records where relevant; professional tax advice as required. |
| Exchange rates | Foreign-currency earnings converted to the reporting currency | Currency and date method consistently documented. |
Describe whether you create illustration, fiction, fine art, animation or other works.
Explain what artistic access, commissioned work or benefits paying members receive.
List actual works delivered, publication dates and series, without disclosing supporters’ private information.
Match gross sales to fees, reversals, payouts and account deposits by month.
Separate unrelated consultation, marketing, brand sponsorship and passive receipts where relevant.
Set out realistic production plans and any genuine future contracts or subscription history.
Send an overview of your creative work, six to twelve months of genuine earnings summaries if available, and intended activities in Japan.
Request an English ConsultationThe Immigration Services Agency publishes no fixed Artist rule requiring 100 subscribers, US$5,000 a month or any specific Patreon balance. It requires supporting material explaining paid artistic activities and, where no institutional contract exists, the content and period of planned work plus estimated income.
A sustained, documented history may be easier to explain than a single high-earning month.
Explain seasonal subscription changes and why projected art income is reasonable.
Savings can be relevant to living conditions, but are not the same as income generated by artistic activity.
| Main actual work in Japan | Status to assess |
|---|---|
| Personally making original income-generating visual or literary art | Artist may be relevant. |
| Providing marketing, design or other specialist contracted work for a Japanese organization | Engineer / Specialist may be relevant. |
| Running a business/company with substantial management activity | Business Manager may need separate review. |
| Remote work that meets a separate short-term regime | Digital Nomad is a separate status, with its own requirements. |
| No income-generating art; instead studying Japanese culture | Cultural Activities may be relevant depending on the facts. |
| Evidence group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Identity and procedure | Application, photo, passport; current residence card where applicable. |
| Professional artistic track record | Detailed artistic CV, works list and genuinely relevant reviews or awards. |
| Contracted artistic projects | Activity, term and remuneration proved by agreements. |
| Independent artistic projects | Self-prepared activities/period/estimated income statement under official Artist rules. |
| Patreon financial evidence | Available account statements, payouts and bank transfers; activity-to-income schedule as supplementary evidence. |
| For an extension | Continued professional art activity and tax/payment certificates as prescribed by ISA. |
Documents written in other languages generally need Japanese translations. The official form lists and specific requests of the relevant regional immigration office apply.
Having members or clients abroad does not automatically defeat an Artist application. However, payments from abroad and art activities performed in Japan must be clearly distinguished. The applicant should demonstrate what original remunerated creative work will take place in Japan, and why the income estimate is realistic.
A work may be subject to copyright or platform licensing rules. Those questions do not create an immigration status. If you use AI-assisted workflows, record human creative steps honestly and review applicable rights separately. A large number of supporters is not a ruling that the work is copyrightable or that immigration will classify it as Artist.
Identify the actual artistic content and whether Artist is the right status.
Prepare works catalogue, career, publications, genuine reviews or commissions.
Create a consistent monthly revenue and payout summary.
Describe the physical work, creative series and plausible earnings after moving.
Choose COE, change or renewal and translate required source documents.
Complete the paid evidence and application scope without guaranteeing a result.
Potentially, if their main activities are genuinely income-generating arts and they can document works, professional achievements, future plans and income. Patreon membership alone is not a legal qualification.
Not automatically. Subscription receipts may have a different commercial basis from wages. Explain how they arise from artistic production and provide the actual statements and transfers.
No universal Patreon subscriber count appears in the official Artist documentation. The art activities, evidence and credible remuneration are central.
No. Any income figure is only part of the case. Immigration assesses the substance of the art, real activity and future plans in Japan.
Possibly; assess the actual remunerated art made in Japan, income records, proposed plans and correct status.
The official Artist document list allows applicants without a specific institutional contract to describe their activities, period and expected income.
Screenshots alone may be insufficient. Export available Earnings and Payouts records (including CSVs), reconcile withdrawals to bank deposits and connect the figures to artistic deliverables.
Separate gross receipts from reversals, fees and net payouts so the income summary matches genuine bank transfers.
Provide accurate reasons and historical trends; explain ongoing art work and realistic income expectations. An application result cannot be guaranteed.
Their character and connection to actual artistic activities should be examined individually. Support unrelated to artistic activity is not automatically qualifying remuneration.
Potentially, with an honest explanation of original art activity and AI use. AI tool usage does not itself establish immigration qualification.
Provide a separated schedule for each source and link the relevant receipts to qualifying artistic production.
Do not disclose unnecessary personal information. Use reasonably redacted authentic financial and activity evidence, subject to any specific official document request.
Not necessarily. Gross receipts, fees, transfers and taxable figures differ. Use factual evidence and obtain qualified tax advice if needed.
Passive royalties alone do not prove a proposal to undertake qualifying art in Japan. Future artistic activities need explanation.
The classification and the official contract or independent-activity evidence requirements depend on the actual relationship and work.
Not every applicant must show a Japan exhibition. Other genuine professional achievements and a credible work history can also be relevant.
