Japan Cultural Activities Visa | COE & Application Support
For overseas researchers, traditional arts learners, martial arts students and Japanese host organizations. We help determine whether your proposed activity fits Japan’s “Cultural Activities” status of residence and prepare an appropriate application.
Phone hours 9:00–18:00 (Japan time) · Online contact form available at any time.
Who this service is for
A Cultural Activities status is for qualifying non-remunerated academic or artistic activities, specialized research into culture or skills particular to Japan, or learning such skills under an expert. It is not a general work visa or a visa for any leisure course.
We accept enquiries from outside Japan. Eligibility and required documents are reviewed case by case.
Who may qualify?
Academic or artistic researchers
Unpaid scholarly or artistic projects, supported by a specific research plan and a host or activity location.
Traditional culture learners
Advanced study with an expert in tea ceremony, ikebana, Japanese dance, martial arts or traditional craftsmanship.
Japanese receiving organizations
Universities, studios, schools, instructors or cultural associations hosting a foreign participant.
Cultural Activities vs other statuses
The same topic can lead to different immigration procedures depending on the educational setting, remuneration and exact duties.
| Proposed activity | Status to examine |
|---|---|
| Unpaid academic or artistic research | Cultural Activities may apply, subject to the actual project and arrangement. |
| Teaching or research as paid employment | Professor, Research or another work-authorizing status may need consideration. |
| Full-time study at an eligible educational institution | Student status may be more appropriate. |
| Brief cultural tourism or short lessons | Temporary Visitor may be relevant; permitted activities and duration must be checked. |
Documents for a COE or status application
Application routes and professional assistance
We can review eligibility, coordinate with the Japanese host, organize supporting papers and discuss permitted filing methods. The application route depends on jurisdiction and the particular case.
Coming from overseas
A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) may be obtained in Japan before applying for a visa at the competent Japanese diplomatic mission. A COE does not guarantee a visa or admission.
Already in Japan
We check whether a change of status is necessary and feasible, including your current stay and the planned activity.
Extending your stay
Continuation of the genuine qualifying activity, updated plans and sufficient living funds should be documented.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cultural Activities the same as a tourist visa?
No. Short visits and genuine long-term academic or expert-led cultural activities may require different immigration statuses.
Can I receive a salary from a Japanese host?
Paid work may change the appropriate status. Any honorarium, stipend or reimbursement should be assessed based on its substance.
How much money must be in my bank account?
There is no universal amount that guarantees approval. Your entire proposed stay, costs, accommodation and funding evidence matter.
Does learning karate or Zen automatically qualify?
No. The seriousness, duration, expert supervision and actual content of the activity must be documented.
Can I apply while living outside Japan?
Enquiries can be made from abroad. For a COE case we assess the Japanese-side applicant or representative and the permitted filing procedure.
