What Is the Japan Entertainer Visa?
"Entertainer" (興行 / Kogyo) is a Japanese status of residence for certain paid or professional entertainment-related activities, such as theatrical performances, singing, dancing, musical performances, sports entertainment and certain other entertainment activities.
It is important to distinguish the status of residence from the visa issued by a Japanese embassy or consulate. A COE is normally sought in Japan first for an overseas performer planning to enter under this status; after issuance, the performer generally applies for a visa at the appropriate Japanese diplomatic mission.
| Item | General information |

| Available periods of stay | 3 years, 1 year, 6 months, 3 months or 30 days, as determined through immigration procedures |

| Where to begin | Confirm the correct immigration category and the Japanese-side arrangements before applying |
Which Entertainer Criteria Apply?
The applicable criteria and documents depend on the nature of the engagement—not merely the artist's occupation or the name of the venue.
Criteria 1(a), 1(b) or 1(c)
Typically considered for theatrical, musical, singing, dancing and similar live performances. The distinction depends on contractual structures, the organizer, venue conditions and other legal criteria.
Criteria 2
Generally concerns entertainment other than theatrical, musical, singing or dancing performances, including qualifying professional sporting entertainment.
Criteria 3
Can cover promotion of goods or businesses, film or broadcast production, commercial photography and commercial recording or video production.
Other immigration categories
A director, cameraworker, technical crew member, artist creating independent works or sports coach may require a different assessment. Not every project participant qualifies for Entertainer.
Documents Commonly Needed for an Entertainer COE
The Immigration Services Agency of Japan publishes category-specific document requirements. Depending on the case, preparation may include:
This is a practical overview, not a fixed checklist for every applicant. Exact submissions depend on the applicable criteria and current official requirements. Additional documents may be requested during examination.
Information to Prepare Before Contacting Us
To help us assess your project, please provide the artist's nationality and country of residence, number of performers, type of activity, expected dates and cities, Japanese organizer or business partner, planned compensation and current contract status. If some details are not yet finalized, please indicate that.
How the Japan Entertainer Visa Process Works
Initial Project Review
We discuss the performers, Japanese host or contracting organization, venue, activity type, remuneration, intended dates and likely immigration category.
Document Plan & Quotation
We identify the required Japanese-side and performer-side evidence, explain the scope of our services and provide a quotation before engagement.
COE Application in Japan
We assist with preparing and, where legally permitted and agreed, handling the COE application through the appropriate Japanese immigration procedure.
Visa Application Abroad
Following COE issuance, the performer generally submits a visa application to the appropriate Japanese embassy or consulate and completes travel preparations.
Entry & Authorized Activities
The performer enters Japan through the required entry procedures and engages only in activities permitted by the granted immigration status.
Applying from Outside Japan: Important Practical Points
Japanese-side organization
Many applications require contracts and supporting documents from a Japanese organizer, contracting entity or receiving organization. We can review the roles of the parties involved, but our office does not act as the event promoter or provide a fictitious sponsor.
Overseas talent agencies
A foreign agency may manage the artist and negotiate fees. Immigration review can still require clear documentation of the artist's actual work in Japan and the relationship with the Japanese business.
Multiple artists or tour dates
We can coordinate documentation across a group, but each foreign applicant's individual eligibility and submission must be considered. Multi-venue itineraries should be explained consistently.
Already residing in Japan
Someone already in Japan may need a change of status or another procedure. Existing permission must be checked before undertaking an activity outside its scope.
Professional Fees
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application — Entertainer | From ¥110,000 (including Japanese consumption tax) |
| Change of status of residence — Entertainer | From ¥110,000 (tax included) |
| Extension of period of stay — Entertainer, where there are no significant changes | From ¥44,000 (tax included) |
Fees vary according to the number of performers, category, contracts, documentation, translation requirements and any required travel or in-person work. Government fees, consular fees, translations, certificates, postage and travel expenses may be charged separately, where applicable. A quotation is provided after reviewing your circumstances.
Send us the planned event date, performer count, nationality, activity type and Japanese counterpart. We welcome inquiries in English.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do foreign musicians need an Entertainer visa for a single concert in Japan?
They may. A one-day engagement does not automatically qualify for Temporary Visitor status. The performance, compensation, contractual arrangements and other circumstances must be reviewed before travel.
Can I perform under Japan's visa-waiver program?
A visa waiver for short visits is not a general authorization to undertake paid or professional entertainment work in Japan. The permitted purpose of entry must match the actual activities.
My agency is overseas. Can you still assist?
Yes. We accept English-language inquiries from overseas agencies and artists. We first confirm whether the project has an appropriate Japanese organizer, contracting or receiving entity and what arrangements are needed for a viable application.
Can your office provide a Japanese sponsor?
We provide immigration document and application support. We do not act as the concert promoter, employer or event sponsor merely to obtain immigration permission. We can review an existing Japanese-side arrangement and explain potential documentation gaps.
Can you assist our whole band or dance group?
Yes. We can discuss coordinated preparation for multiple performers. Immigration eligibility and required applications still need to be assessed for each individual, and fees depend on the size and complexity of the project.
Are DJs, models and commercial actors covered by the same rules?
Not necessarily. Live musical performances and commercial filming or photography can fall under different Entertainer criteria. We examine the actual activities and the relevant set of requirements.
Do camera operators and tour managers need Entertainer status too?
Not automatically. Technical, managerial and other non-performance roles require separate immigration assessment. We recommend listing each person's duties before deciding how to proceed.
How long will the COE and visa process take?
Timeframes vary depending on the immigration authority, completeness of documents, case complexity and the relevant Japanese diplomatic mission. Please contact us as early as possible; no approval or delivery date can be guaranteed.
Does an issued COE guarantee a Japanese visa?
No. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a COE does not guarantee visa issuance. The subsequent visa examination and entry procedures are separate.
Can I contact your office in English?
Yes. Please use our contact form and write your message in English. Overseas clients who do not have a Japanese telephone number can also use the form.
