| Route | Best suited to | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term visit / visa waiver | Tourism, meetings and other permitted short visits | Not a general right to reside or work in Japan |
| Designated Activities: Long Stay for Sightseeing and Recreation | Eligible adults meeting nationality and savings criteria | Generally 6 months, extendable to a maximum of 1 year; not a work or permanent residence route |
| Business Manager | Foreign nationals actually operating or managing a qualifying Japanese business | Requires business substance and multiple criteria; investment alone is not sufficient |
| Dependent / family-related status | Eligible spouses and children of certain residents | Depends on the principal resident's status and individual family circumstances |
| Intra-company Transferee / Highly Skilled Professional | Qualifying international assignments, specialists and executives | Employment, activity, experience and other category-specific rules apply |

Japan long-stay visa for financially independent visitors
Japan has a specific Designated Activities status for a long stay for sightseeing and recreation. It can suit affluent individuals who wish to enjoy Japan beyond an ordinary holiday without working or conducting business activities that require a separate status.
6 months
An eligible extension may allow a total stay of up to 1 year.
Over JPY 30 million
Qualifying savings held by the applicant and spouse combined, as applicable.
18+ and eligible nationality
Applicants must be nationals/citizens of a Japanese visa-waiver country or region.
Main eligibility and evidence
An accompanying spouse can be considered under the specific rules for this route, including the requirements concerning residence and travel in Japan. Where spouses intend to stay separately under this scheme, savings exceeding JPY 60 million may be required. The precise arrangement must be checked in advance.
Dependent children cannot accompany a parent under this particular wealthy visitor long-stay scheme. It is not a family migration visa, an employment authorization or a direct path to permanent residence. A separate lawful route is required for any family member who does not qualify.
We can review which evidence is necessary, whether an appropriate COE application pathway exists, and how to prepare the Japan-side immigration documents. The relevant Japanese embassy or consulate remains responsible for any visa issuance that is required.
Official Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance on long stays for sightseeing and recreation
UAE citizens and UAE residents: an important distinction
Japan's visa rules are generally based on nationality and passport, not merely the country where someone lives. A UAE residence permit does not by itself make a foreign national eligible for the same visa waiver as a UAE citizen.
UAE passport holders
Since 1 July 2025, UAE nationals holding qualifying valid ICAO-compliant ordinary IC passports have been eligible for visa-free short visits of up to 90 days for permitted purposes. That is separate from the longer-stay designated activities scheme.
Expatriates living in the UAE
British, Indian, Pakistani, European and other nationals living in Dubai or Abu Dhabi must be assessed according to their own nationality, travel document, residence circumstances and purpose of entry.
Do not assume that entering Japan as a temporary visitor allows a later switch to a long-term resident or business status. Changes from Temporary Visitor status are restricted and require individual assessment. The appropriate procedure should ideally be reviewed before travel.
Japan Business Manager Visa: build a genuine business presence
If you intend to actively direct or manage a company in Japan, the status of residence known as Business Manager may be relevant. It is not an investment-for-residency program. Japan substantially revised the entry criteria effective 16 October 2025.
Capital / business scale
Generally JPY 30 million or more in qualifying capital, contributions or other qualifying business investment, depending on the form of business.
Full-time employee
At least one eligible full-time employee is generally necessary. Not every foreign employee's residence category counts toward this criterion.
Japanese-language capability
The applicant or an eligible full-time employee must generally demonstrate Japanese proficiency corresponding to CEFR B2 or an accepted equivalent.
Qualifications & business experience
The applicant must generally have an appropriate master's-level or higher degree, or at least three years of relevant management experience.
Real office and operations
Suitable business premises, a genuine operational plan, any required permits, and evidence of actual management activity must be considered.
Business plan assessment
For relevant applications, the proposed business plan requires evaluation by an appropriately qualified expert under the immigration rules.
Incorporating a company does not automatically establish Business Manager eligibility either. The business must be genuine, and the immigration requirements must be assessed separately from company formation. Existing status holders and certain other cases may be subject to particular transitional or special rules.

Before committing substantial capital, ask us to assess the immigration implications and the documents that will be needed.
Company formation and cross-border business support
UAE-based founders and companies may need several different professional services when setting up in Japan. We focus on administrative documentation, immigration applications and relevant permit procedures, coordinating with other Japanese professionals where their work is legally required.
Establishing a company
Company-type and business-purpose review, articles and related documentation within our professional scope, administrative permit checks, and planning for immigration eligibility. Company-registration filings are handled by a qualified judicial scrivener or other authorized person.
Expanding an existing UAE business
Assessing whether a Japanese entity, branch, executive assignment or other structure is relevant to the proposed activities. Immigration procedures must reflect the true nature of the Japan-side activity.
Executive and employee relocation
Reviewing the potential suitability of Intra-company Transferee, Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, or other employment-based categories, where applicable.
Highly Skilled Professional / J-Skip
For potentially eligible senior executives and professionals, we can examine the required activities, education, management experience, remuneration and other criteria. High income alone does not guarantee qualification.
For projects still at the preparation stage, Japan's designated startup-support schemes may also be worth considering where a participating public authority and the applicant's circumstances meet the applicable rules.
Family relocation, dependants and everyday residence questions
Moving as a family requires more than choosing a visa for the principal applicant. We examine each spouse's and child's status separately, including how the principal resident's eligibility may affect family applications.
Spouses and children
For certain work or business residence statuses, an eligible spouse and dependent children may be able to apply under a family-related status. Relationship, support and residence requirements must be documented.
Education and longer-term plans
Schooling plans, length of intended residence and the activities of individual family members can affect the appropriate status. Student or other categories may need separate consideration.
Parents and household arrangements
Parents and domestic staff do not automatically qualify for residence as dependants. Any relevant special route needs its own conditions checked.
Renewal and future residence
We can explain status renewals, changes and the distinct requirements for permanent residence where a client becomes eligible. Property ownership and wealth alone do not confer permanent residence.
Japan also has separate medical-stay arrangements for qualifying patients and, where appropriate, accompanying persons. These require medical and visa documentation. We can discuss the immigration-document aspect, while healthcare and medical guarantees must be arranged with the appropriate providers.

Passport nationality and UAE residence circumstances; preferred duration of stay; family composition; proposed business activity; savings evidence for the wealthy visitor route; or company, staffing and business-plan evidence for a business case. The precise requirements depend on the selected procedure.
Overseas clients should also be aware that a COE is not itself an entry visa; any required visa application and subsequent entry examination are separate. Timelines vary by category and individual circumstances, and we do not promise a particular decision date.
Fees: tailored quotation for every case
We prepare a case-specific quotation after understanding the objective, documents, family members, business structure and the professional work involved. We do not publish a fixed package fee for these UAE-focused services.

The agreed immigration or administrative document services, deliverables, assumptions and, where relevant, support with additional document requests.
Possible additional costs
Government fees, company-registration taxes, third-party professional fees, translations, document certification, overseas delivery, travel or other necessary expenses may be charged separately.

Japan residency and visa questions from UAE-based clients
Can a wealthy UAE citizen stay in Japan longer than 90 days?
Potentially. Eligible visa-waiver nationals may qualify for the designated activities route for long-term sightseeing and recreation, subject to age, savings, insurance, purpose and other criteria. It ordinarily provides six months, with a possible extension up to a maximum total of one year.
Is JPY 30 million enough to obtain permanent residence in Japan?
No. Savings above JPY 30 million relate to one particular temporary long-stay route, not permanent residence. Permanent residence has separate eligibility requirements and is not granted simply because someone is wealthy.
I live in Dubai but do not hold a UAE passport. Can I use the long-stay program?
Your passport nationality must be eligible under the relevant visa-waiver framework, in addition to meeting the other criteria. A UAE residence permit alone is not enough. We review your nationality and intended activity first.
Can my spouse and children stay in Japan with me?
This depends on the status. The wealthy sightseeing/recreation long-stay program contains special rules for spouses but does not allow dependent children to accompany under that same scheme. Certain employment and business statuses may allow eligible spouse and child applications under a separate family-related category.
Does buying an apartment or luxury property in Japan provide a visa?
No. Purchasing Japanese property does not automatically grant a status of residence or permanent residence. Immigration permission depends on a qualifying activity or other legally recognized basis.
Can I get a Business Manager Visa by investing JPY 30 million?
Investment or capitalization by itself is insufficient. The revised standards generally require qualifying capital or business scale, at least one eligible full-time employee, appropriate Japanese-language capability, the applicant's relevant qualifications or experience, genuine premises, and a properly assessed business plan, among other requirements.
Can I form a Japanese company while living in the UAE?
Company formation may be possible subject to the applicable corporate and practical requirements. However, company incorporation and immigration permission are separate. We can assist with appropriate administrative documentation and coordinate with an authorized professional for commercial registration where necessary.
Can a high-income executive qualify under Highly Skilled Professional or J-Skip?
Possibly, where the intended Japanese activity and the applicable academic, career, salary or other requirements are satisfied. These routes are not unconditional investor visas, and we review the actual work and eligibility before recommending an application.
Can I work remotely from Japan on a long-stay sightseeing visa?
Do not assume remote work is permitted under a sightseeing or recreation status. Japan has separate rules for permitted activities, and some remote-work scenarios may involve distinct immigration categories. Obtain an individual assessment before making plans.
Can I change from a tourist stay to a longer-term status after entering Japan?
A change from Temporary Visitor status is restricted and is not a standard substitute for planning the correct route before entry. Specific legal conditions and exceptional circumstances must be assessed before any application.
Do I need to visit your office in Yamagata?
Not necessarily. We accept inquiries from the UAE and can discuss documents remotely. Whether an in-person step or a Japan-based applicant is needed depends on the procedure, filing requirements and case circumstances.
Do you offer a fixed fee or guaranteed approval?
No guaranteed approval is offered. Fees are quoted individually after reviewing the proposed work. We explain the professional fee, likely third-party expenses and proposed scope before you decide whether to engage us.
Will my documents need translation?
Foreign-language documents submitted for Japanese immigration procedures generally require Japanese translations. Which documents and any notarization or authentication requirements apply depend on the application.
Can your office assist with taxes, investments and property purchases?
We address immigration and administrative documentation within our licensed scope. Tax filings, property brokerage, commercial registration, investment regulation and other specialist matters must be handled by appropriately qualified professionals where required.
