Customer negotiations, international contracts, channel strategy and key accounts.
Market-entry research, overseas distribution, alliances and growth planning.
Trade contracts, overseas purchasing, logistics coordination and specialist import-export work.
There is no independent residence status named “Overseas Sales Visa.” The common legal category is Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services. Professional overseas sales can involve humanities knowledge in economics, business and trade, or international services based on foreign cultural knowledge. The route depends on the actual job and background.
Strategy, market analysis, contract economics and overseas sales requiring specialist commercial knowledge.
Overseas transactions, communication and promotion genuinely requiring thought or sensitivity rooted in foreign culture.
Store cashier, warehouse loading, routine packing or simple domestic sales are not converted into professional work by the title.
| Professional route | General qualification approach | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Specialized humanities based on university study | Qualifying university degree reasonably related to the planned economics, commerce, management or trade work. | International business graduate preparing overseas market-entry plans. |
| Humanities through professional experience | Generally 10 years of relevant experience, under applicable counting rules. | Sales strategy professional without a qualifying related degree. |
| International services based on foreign culture | Generally 3 years of relevant experience in the specified type of culturally grounded work. | Documented international trade or promotion work meeting the prescribed activity. |
| University exception to 3-year international-services experience | Specific university-graduate exception for translation, interpretation and language instruction, not a general exception for overseas sales. | Do not apply this exception to ordinary trade negotiations without analysis. |
| Work area | Specialist responsibilities | Proof to consider |
|---|---|---|
| International customer sales | Business-to-business product proposals, negotiation of supply and service terms. | Regional account list, proposed duties, commercial negotiation scope. |
| Market entry | Demand and competitor analysis, market selection, go-to-market strategy. | Research projects, business plans, forecast methodology. |
| Distribution partners | Foreign distributor agreements, pricing, commission models, channel development. | Distribution strategy and client-side contracts where disclosable. |
| Trade / import-export | Incoterms-related coordination, invoices, shipment terms, export planning and compliance coordination. | Trade-related contracts, invoices and non-confidential work examples. |
| Global alliances | Partnership analysis, licensing negotiations and overseas corporate relationship management. | Corporate development project and role description. |
| Routine packing or shipping | Physical logistics alone does not ordinarily constitute Specialist in Humanities/International Services work. | Do not disguise principal warehouse work as a professional international sales assignment. |
When relying on experience, immigration may require employer-issued documents specifying the precise jobs performed and periods of employment. A simple letter reading “Sales Executive — 2019 to 2024” is less useful than detailed evidence of market analysis, international sales and negotiation responsibilities.
A Japanese company planning to hire for overseas business should describe the products, destination markets and scope of the role. A new international sales strategy can sometimes be legitimate without years of export history, but a speculative job title without a credible business plan is difficult to assess.
Present actual foreign customers, transaction history and the specialist sales vacancy.
Show an actionable overseas strategy, products, sales channels, expected job duties and resources.
Demonstrate genuine corporate operation, capital to pay salary and a plausible volume of specialist work.
The ordinary Engineer/Specialist work status has no universal Japanese N2 requirement and no single statutory annual pay threshold. Remuneration must generally be at least equivalent to what a Japanese national would receive for comparable duties. An employer can require a relevant language for business needs.
For applicable category 3/4 applications from April 15, 2026, where the main work is interpersonal services using language ability—such as some overseas negotiations, translation and interpretation—CEFR B2-equivalent proof in the language used for work may be required. The classification and specific evidence need individual review.

Yes. Economics, commerce, business or international-trade studies may be related to genuine professional overseas sales.
No. The actual assigned tasks, applicant qualifications, remuneration and receiving company must satisfy immigration requirements.
Physical warehouse work as the principal job generally is not the specialist overseas sales activity contemplated by this status.
Possibly. If the job principally involves language-based interpersonal services and the case falls under the 2026 requirements, evidence of proficiency in the work language may be required.
There is no blanket N2 requirement for every overseas sales professional; assess specific employer duties and applicable category 3/4 language requirements.
It may be possible with a credible market expansion plan and sufficiently real work; a vague aspiration without actual business substance is weak evidence.
It depends on whether specialized trade knowledge and substantial professional judgment are central, rather than routine data entry or packing.
