Web and UX/UI designers
Explain specialized digital design, information architecture, research and design-system work.
Do you have an offer to work in Japan as a web designer, UX/UI designer, graphic designer, SEO specialist, digital marketing analyst or advertising strategist? These roles may qualify for the residence status Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services when the actual work, your academic or professional background, the Japanese organization and employment terms meet the legal requirements. We assist overseas candidates and Japanese hiring companies with evidence and immigration applications.

Explain specialized digital design, information architecture, research and design-system work.
Document market research, advertising strategy, analytics, SEO and campaign planning.
Support hiring documents, category requirements and realistic descriptions of actual duties.
The usual category is Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services (技術・人文知識・国際業務), sometimes shortened to an “Engineer/Specialist work visa.” Japan's Immigration Services Agency expressly lists designers and marketing personnel among typical examples. There is no separate statutory residence category called “Web Designer Visa.”
Whether a particular role falls under technical or humanities knowledge, or work requiring a sensitivity or way of thinking based on foreign culture, depends on the duties—not the employer's job title. The qualification route must be chosen accordingly.
| Position | Examples of professional work | Documents that help explain it |
|---|---|---|
| UX/UI designer | User research, interface architecture, accessibility, interaction design, prototyping, usability analysis. | Role specification, design process, research plan, portfolio. |
| Web / visual designer | Brand and website design, digital visual direction, information design and specialized production. | Project briefs, design deliverables, related education. |
| Digital marketing strategist | Market segmentation, positioning, campaign strategy, performance analysis and budget planning. | Marketing plan, KPIs, analyses, employer's detailed responsibilities. |
| SEO / growth specialist | Search research, technical/content strategy, measurement, conversion optimization and experimentation. | Analytical reports, job description, expertise records. |
| Paid advertising specialist | Audience research, media planning, ad spend optimization, attribution analysis and creative testing. | Campaign planning, financial accountability, reports. |
| Overseas branding / PR | Specialist promotion, creative adaptation and communications requiring understanding of a foreign market or culture. | Target-country strategy, language/creative skills, relevant experience. |
There are distinct legal pathways under the broad Engineer/Specialist status. Do not assume the same experience requirement applies to every designer or marketer. First determine which statutory type of specialist activity the Japanese work actually involves.
| Route | General principle | Possible evidence |
|---|---|---|
| University education | For technical/humanities work, qualifying university-level education in a reasonably related field; the relationship is considered in light of the actual studies and duties. | Degree, transcript, curriculum, detailed job description. |
| Relevant professional experience | For technical/humanities work, generally 10 years of relevant experience if using the career route; certain study periods may count where prescribed. | Employer certificates with exact dates and job duties, eligible study history. |
| International services experience | For qualifying work grounded in foreign culture—such as specified design, public relations or advertising work—generally 3 years of relevant experience, under the applicable criteria. | Detailed prior responsibilities, culturally specific work, proof of periods. |
| Japanese specialized-training college | Qualifying Japanese specialist-school credentials and the course-to-role relationship, subject to the particular rules and exceptions. | Diploma, Specialist or Advanced Specialist title, curriculum and job duties. |
Applicants may hold degrees in graphic design, computer science, business, economics, media studies, psychology, languages or another subject. Immigration reviews what was studied and how it relates to the specialist duties in Japan. For university graduates, the relation can be assessed relatively flexibly, but it is not irrelevant.
Design education for a visual/UX position, or business/marketing education for market analysis and strategy, may be straightforward to explain.
Relevant courses, research, economics, statistics, digital media or usability studies can help explain an indirect connection.
Examine the correct professional-experience route and whether the proposed job actually meets technical/humanities or international-services conditions.
Web design and digital marketing teams often combine specialist tasks with operational administration. The actual principal activities should call for the advanced knowledge or foreign-culture-based professional abilities required by this residence status.
| Work arrangement | Immigration question |
|---|---|
| Research-led UX design and conversion optimization | Explain user research, specialist design methodology, analysis and responsibility for decisions. |
| Marketing research and campaign management | Explain market analysis, strategic planning, data interpretation and meaningful professional judgment. |
| Only uploading product images or copying templates | Routine platform operation alone may not demonstrate the required specialized knowledge. |
| Only scheduling social posts or repetitive clerical entry | Show whether the principal work actually involves specialist planning rather than routine execution. |
| Warehouse packing, cashiering or sales-floor shifts | These cannot normally be the primary duties used to justify Engineer/Specialist status. |
| Initial practical training | A limited training period may be examined separately, but should not conceal a long-term non-specialist role. |
There is no blanket JLPT N2 requirement for every web design or marketing position. However, from April 15, 2026, certain category 3 or 4 applications involving principally language-based interpersonal duties require evidence of CEFR B2-equivalent ability in the language used at work. This can matter, for example, in international public-relations or customer-facing communications roles; it should not be applied indiscriminately to analytical or production-focused jobs.
The same reform added a declaration concerning the Japanese receiving organization's representative to applicable category 3 and 4 applications. For an ongoing extension with unchanged duties, the language-document requirement has its own exceptions, subject to a request for more evidence.
The required evidence depends on whether the Japanese contracting organization falls within category 1, 2, 3 or 4, the application procedure and the actual work. A newly incorporated agency may need to show more about its projects and ability to pay the employee than an established enterprise.
| Document group | Examples and purpose |
|---|---|
| Application / identity | Correct COE, change or extension form, passport, residence card if in Japan, and photograph as required. |
| Education | University degree and transcript, specialized-training credentials, relevant courses if needed. |
| Professional experience | CV, employer-issued role descriptions, start and end dates, proof of actual design or marketing responsibilities. |
| Work duties | Specific position description, project assignments, methods, tools and decision-making responsibilities. |
| Portfolio / supporting records | Design case studies, anonymized UX research, marketing strategy, analytics samples, campaigns where legitimately shareable. |
| Employment and company | Contract, compensation, receiving-organization category and business records required for that category. |
| Special cases | 2026 declaration, applicable CEFR B2 evidence, dispatch contracts or other prescribed documents. |
Portfolios are supporting materials, not a universal formal mandatory attachment. Protect client confidentiality and do not submit confidential campaign information without proper authority. Immigration may request additional documents beyond the base checklist; foreign-language materials generally require Japanese translations.
Identify whether specialist technical/humanities activities or qualifying international services best match the actual work.
Confirm contract, compensation, company category and genuine business operations.
Organize degrees, relevant experience, job duties, appropriate language evidence and translations.
For an overseas candidate, ordinarily the COE route; for a student or other eligible resident, a change-of-status application.
Where applicable, consular visa issuance and landing examination remain distinct from a COE decision.
When renewing or changing employers, review new duties, required organization notifications and continued eligibility.
Tell us your precise duties, major or professional experience, Japanese employer and present country or residence status. We will explain the information needed for an immigration assessment.
Ask for an English ConsultationDigital marketing and web design are often performed remotely, but remote work does not automatically create eligibility for a Japanese residence status. The law requires the appropriate contractual relationship with an organization in Japan and qualifying activities. A purely foreign client list, occasional projects, or online marketplace freelance work may not establish the ordinary Engineer/Specialist route by itself.
Review salary, technical or humanities duties and the employer's documents.
Evaluate whether the actual contract, work and remuneration meet the status criteria, rather than assuming any invoice is sufficient.
Consider whether another lawful status or residence arrangement is necessary; Japan's digital-nomad rules are separate and limited.
| Service | Professional fee (tax included) |
|---|---|
| Engineer/Specialist COE application | From ¥110,000 |
| Change to Engineer/Specialist status | From ¥110,000 |
| Standard extension with no employer change | From ¥44,000 |
| Unusual degree/career evidence, agency dispatch or complex documents | Individual quotation |
These are starting professional fees; translations, certificates, postage, government permission fees where applicable, and other disbursements are separate. A COE application ordinarily does not carry an immigration filing fee. Statutory fees for approved changes/extensions depend on the filing and period granted under the rules applicable at the time. We explain the case-specific quote before paid work begins.
Potentially. Professional web design can fall under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services when actual duties, qualifications, a qualifying Japan-side contract and other conditions are satisfied.
Yes, qualifying specialist marketing work is among activities contemplated under the status. Immigration examines market research, strategic planning and actual duties, rather than relying on the marketing job title.
Not always. Another relevant university degree or a qualifying experience route may apply, depending on the nature of the work. A degree title alone is not decisive.
It may be relevant where the role calls for marketing, management, economics or related specialized humanities knowledge. Courses and specific responsibilities should be reviewed.
The degree-to-work relationship is assessed on the actual coursework and duties. Depending on the work type, a career route may also be possible; an unrelated degree plus a portfolio is not an automatic entitlement.
Possibly. For technical/humanities work, generally ten years of relevant experience may satisfy the professional career route. For qualifying international services, a separate generally three-year rule can apply. The classification must be accurate.
No. Qualifying university education is another route. Some specific design activities grounded in foreign culture may instead fall under the international-services rules, which have different career criteria.
A portfolio can help demonstrate professional work but does not itself satisfy required degrees, experience or the Japan-side contractual requirements. Relevant evidence must be assembled.
No. Vendor certifications can show skills, but they do not automatically replace the academic or experience criteria of Engineer/Specialist residence status.
Not for every marketing role. Some category 3/4 applications principally using languages for interpersonal duties require accepted CEFR B2-equivalent evidence in the work language. The actual activities and exemption rules must be reviewed.
There is no universal fixed ¥3 million annual threshold for the ordinary Engineer/Specialist status. Remuneration generally must be at least equivalent to Japanese employees doing comparable work.
If the primary work is routine posting or repetitive support, it may not demonstrate the specialist activities required. Substantial campaign strategy, analysis and professional responsibilities need to be shown where claimed.
Potentially. A proper job offer, qualification evidence, company category documents and a qualifying COE application may support recruitment, with separate consular visa steps as needed.
Yes, if the role and background meet the criteria, but a newly founded company may need more evidence of genuine business operations, financial capacity and specialist job duties.
Not automatically. The ordinary status requires an appropriate Japan-side organizational contract and activities; online work for foreign clients alone may not provide that basis.
Review eligibility and apply for change of status where required. Student status alone generally does not authorize full-time work merely because a company has offered a position.
Not necessarily if the new work remains within your authorized status. Required contracting-organization notifications generally must be made within 14 days, and new duties should be assessed before renewal.
Our starting professional fee for an Engineer/Specialist COE or change application is ¥110,000 including tax. Ordinary no-change renewal starts from ¥44,000 including tax. Additional expenses are quoted separately.
